Inclusive Community Theater
Inclusive Community Theater
The project involves a creative and participatory initiative in the Roman Roma camps, with the aim of involving young Roma and promoting social inclusion through art. Here are the main elements of the project:
1. Introduction through a theatrical performance:
The project begins with the performance of the comedy *”Waiting for Bo”, performed by Roma and non-Roma actors. The show, which ironically tells the journey of two young Roma in search of a better future, aims to bring the public closer together and create a cultural bridge.
Shows were held at the equipped village of Salone, Gordiani and at Metropoliz.
2. Interactive art activities:
After the show, artistic activities (flash mobs, theatrical and musical games) will be held in various Roma camps. These activities, defined with the contribution of the facilitators of the two organizations, will mainly involve young people between 14 and 30 years old.
3. Youth empowerment through peer creators:
Among the audience and the workshop participants, five young people will become long-term “peer creators”, taking part in theatrical and team building exercises and participating in different roles such as acting, writing, music, developing their talents with the support of facilitators.
4. Involvement of the Roma community:
The project aims to create intergenerational connections inside and outside Roma camps and squats in the city of Rome, addressing issues such as citizenship, segregation and poverty. The initiative could become the first professional theatre project in Italy with Roma actors from the camps.
5. Inclusive and constructive feedback:
Feedback will be collected to understand how relevant the topics covered are for the Roma community and how to improve the cultural sensitivity of the show for future performances.
6. Long-term goals and broad participation:
The project aims to extend youth participation to other cultural and educational events. The shows will be presented in various Italian contexts and at a festival in Romania to raise awareness among a diverse audience.
8. Case study for broader impact:
The initiative will be documented as a case study to provide a model for other organisations, helping to support young people from diverse backgrounds and promote social inclusion through community theatre.
This approach aims to create a lasting impact within Roma communities by promoting youth participation, social cohesion and increased cultural visibility through community theatre and artistic expression
