CREA CULT 2022 PERFORM EU - European Roma Theater Festivals
The Projects goals:
We will host the eighth edition of the Roma Heroes International Theater Festival in Budapest in May 2025, followed by the second edition in Rome and Bucharest between October and November 2025. Each partner will present one of their productions as part of their local festival program.
During the Budapest festival, selected excerpts from the performances will be recorded and added to the Roma Heroes digital collection on www.romaheroes.org, creating a lasting and accessible archive of the works presented.
After each performance, we will organize audience discussions, offering a space for dialogue and exchange between people from diverse backgrounds.
Through these festivals, our goals are to:
- Highlight the cultural diversity of Roma communities across Europe, giving visibility to their stories, challenges, dreams, and protagonists;
- Offer Roma people the recognition they deserve by portraying their experiences, dramas, and heroes on stage—figures who are too often absent from mainstream narratives—thus contributing to a stronger sense of identity and self-esteem;
- Challenge widespread stereotypes and prejudices, encouraging non-Roma audiences to engage with new, more authentic representations;
- Showcase the richness and value of European Roma theater, inspiring cultural professionals, experts, and institutions to embrace Roma content and better understand the social contexts from which these artistic works emerge, equipping them with tools and insights to support inclusion and solidarity;
- Promote international mobility and visibility for our productions, especially those created by young Roma artists, many of whom train with us over several years, becoming actors, directors, and cultural professionals.
Our ultimate aim is to enable both the theaters we represent and the young artists involved to enter the cultural mainstream and contribute to a lasting and transformative cultural and social impact.
