Motivations

Climate change is one of the most urgent, priority, and challenging issues affecting our times, and above all, the near future of younger generations and the entire planet Earth. Following the many documents signed at the international level—committing participating countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions—concrete actions are being taken by citizens who are increasingly committed to respecting the environment through more conscious choices.

Changes in individual citizens’ behaviors are possible through citizen science initiatives that highlight the impact of individual choices on climate change, as well as each person’s environmental footprint.

Reducing emissions and, in particular, limiting the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees are very difficult goals to achieve. Even if they could be met, today’s younger generations would still have to deal with a different and often more extreme climate, with increasingly frequent disastrous weather events. This could increasingly affect children, adolescents, and their fundamental right to life, as well as all their other rights. Young generations must be placed at the center of the development model, and their well-being—together with that of society—should represent the goal to be pursued.

The project’s actions intend to operate on a local scale to respond to global issues, with a perspective of shared responsibility and action. Education for sustainable development has now become a strategic objective for both the present and the future of our country. The environmental issue, linked to the conservation of the planet’s resources, represents an unavoidable challenge for future generations.

Objectives

The general objective of the project is to promote among young people and citizens ecological education pathways and environmental and climate activism, not only theoretical but as a set of actions that foster changes in both individual and collective attitudes and behaviors.

The project aims to address environmental and climate challenges through citizens’ direct participation in monitoring and assessing the impacts of climate change in cities, thus strengthening citizens’ knowledge and awareness, including their understanding of the role and impact of individual choices (behaviors, lifestyles, and consumption) in daily life.

The specific objectives (SO) of the project are:

  • SO1 – Generate real, collective environmental improvement for 6 million citizens of Lazio.

  • SO2 – Engage local communities in ecosystem protection activities, by promoting among citizens—especially young people—a new environmental awareness.
