Project Erasmus+: Inclusive Community Theater

Lead partner: Rampa prenestina (I) Partner. Independent theater Hungary (HU) Asociatia Teatrala Shoshin (RO)

The partner organizations will develop their expertise in interactive outdoor artistic activities and cooperative community theater production methods with the participation of young people. The expertise of two of the three partners will be shared during an international training session with staff. The techniques used will be summarized in two methodological guides, which will be available for use by other youth/non-formal education and arts organizations to develop their own practices and impact their work. The organizations’ reach will increase in different fields and groups of young people (e.g., Roma camps, slums, schools, middle-class children). We will involve 30 new people from different ethnic and social backgrounds in the artistic and educational activities. They will be facilitated by three to three young Roma and non-Roma peer facilitators, with whom our organizations have already collaborated. During this project, facilitators will develop their skills to become key to expanding the reach and impact of our organizations. By implementing interactive outdoor artistic activities, we will reach a large number of young people from diverse backgrounds, many of whom live in slums or camps, are educationally deprived, lack access to non-formal education, and lack the opportunity to express themselves artistically or learn about active citizenship and European values. Five young people will participate in the creation of a community theater performance based on their own stories and topics of interest. The performance can highlight marginalized topics and raise awareness of the issues these young people face. Participating in cooperative work can develop many of their skills (e.g., social skills, cooperative and problem-solving methods, and employability in the arts or education fields). Their performances will participate in Out of the Frame III. – The International Theatre Forum organized by the Romanian partner in Cluj-Napoca (see Festival and Dissemination Events activities) will also develop their international network and mobility.

Results:

  • Implementation of eight interactive outdoor artistic actions in different locations, reaching approximately 100 young people from diverse backgrounds (e.g., socially marginalized, Roma living in slums, middle-class youth). These actions will be coordinated by our peer facilitators in close collaboration with the Italian and Romanian teams, local NGOs, and schools.
  • Of the 100 young people reached, 15 will be involved in our organization’s work and will begin attending our indoor cultural and educational activities, and five will become peer creators. The performance will be based on stories and topics chosen by the group of young people, building and further developing their skills. We will ensure different roles in the creation of the show, depending on the young people’s skills and interests (e.g., acting, writing, costume and set design, singing, or music). Extroverted and introverted personalities, leaders, and followers, who have different strengths, can all play relevant roles and experience the joy and success of a cooperative work of art.

Dissemination and Outreach:

  • The project aims to disseminate its results widely to maximize its impact and reach. This includes presenting new community theatre performances at least twice in both Italy and Hungary, with a target audience of at least 60 people per performance.
  • Additionally, the project will produce two case studies, one in Italian and one in Hungarian, which will be translated into English for wider accessibility. These case studies, along with the developed methodologies, will be disseminated to 200 European experts and professionals in the fields of education, arts, and youth work.
  • By disseminating its results widely, the project seeks to contribute to knowledge sharing and capacity building across Europe, promoting innovation and best practices in the field.
