Project Erasmus+: Inclusive Community Theater

Lead partner: Rampa prenestina (I) Partner. Independent theater Hungary (HU) Asociatia Teatrala Shoshin (RO)

Partner organizations will strengthen their skills in interactive outdoor artistic activities and participatory community theater, thanks to international training and the creation of two shared methodological guides, which will also be useful to other organizations for replicating and scaling up the project’s impact.

The project will involve 30 young people from diverse social and ethnic backgrounds, including those with educational poverty, facilitated by Roma and non-Roma peer facilitators who will strengthen their roles and skills. The activities will offer opportunities for artistic expression, participation, and personal development to young people often excluded from non-formal education.

Five young people will create a theater performance based on their experiences, developing social, cooperative, and creative skills, and raising awareness of marginalized issues. Participation in the international theater forum “Out of The Frame III” in Cluj-Napoca will also strengthen their mobility and European networks.

Results:

  • The project involves a creative and participatory initiative in Rome’s Roma camps, aiming to engage young people and promote social inclusion through art. Its main elements are:• Introduction through a theatrical performance
The project opens with the comedy “Waiting for Bo,” performed by Roma and non-Roma actors, which humorously recounts the journey of two young Roma in search of a better future. The performance serves as a cultural bridge and a means of engaging with the public and was presented at the Salone, Gordiani, and Metropoliz camps.

    • Interactive artistic activities in the camps
Following the performances, participatory artistic activities—including flash mobs, theatrical and musical games—will be conducted. These activities will be designed with the help of facilitators from partner organizations and are aimed primarily at young people between the ages of 14 and 30.

    • Youth Empowerment through Peer Creators
Five young people selected from among the participants will embark on a long-term journey as peer creators, participating in theater workshops, team-building activities, and creative processes (acting, writing, music), developing artistic and personal skills with the support of expert facilitators.

    • Active Involvement of the Roma Community
The project promotes intergenerational connections within and outside Roma camps and squats, addressing issues such as citizenship, segregation, and poverty, and laying the foundations for one of the first professional theater experiences in Italy with actors drawn directly from the camps.

    • Feedback Collection and Inclusive Development
Feedback will be collected from participants and the community to evaluate the relevance of the content, improve the cultural sensitivity of the show, and strengthen its effectiveness in future performances.

    • Long-Term Objectives and International Dimension
The project aims to expand youth participation in cultural and educational activities, presenting the shows in various Italian contexts and at an international festival in Romania, promoting visibility, exchange, and mobility.

    • Documentation and transferability of results
The initiative will be documented as a case study, offering a replicable model for other organizations interested in promoting social inclusion and youth participation through community theater.

This approach aims to generate a lasting impact, strengthening the participation of Roma youth, social cohesion, and cultural visibility through participatory artistic practices.
